Featuring Judith McCabe

challenge-mccabeThe Challenge: World Influence

This is a most intriguing theme and one that all of us can relate to to create an original piece of stitched art. The 2018 Challenge will be open for registration online from January 1, 2018 thru March 31, 2018. You have two options when entering the Challenge. You may register and complete your piece for evaluation no later than September 1, 2018, or you may register for the Challenge with a Twist and send your proposal and plan to the consultant for creative assistance by July 1, 2018 and send your complete work to her by the September 1, 2018 deadline.

Consultant: The consultant for this exciting challenge is Judith McCabe a well-known stitcher, designer and teacher who holds an MFA in fiber and mixed media and a BA in elementary education. She has been embroidering since earning her Girl Scout badge. Judith is also a certified Zentangle teacher and an author who has written several craft and quilting books. Her work also has appeared in many books and fiber art shows throughout the US. She has taught classes to children and adults in craft stores, educational programs at trade shows and book expos.

Judith feels that those of us who work with fibers, cannot help but be inspired by the textiles and designs from other cultures and our own heritage. Having used samplers as her MFA exhibition, she sees this as a good way to express her heritage and represent the crossover of influences from her familial background.

For this challenge, Judith would like the participants to focus on one particular country or culture or one technique from your heritage and to interpret that in embroidery. You are encouraged to explore a technique that may or may not have been embroidered but that can be interpreted in embroidery or mixed media. The technique can be combined with other techniques and media to create a more cohesive final piece. Minimum size is to be 3.5"x3.5" with a maximum size not to exceed 24" on any side.

Questions to ask yourself – does the design reflect a readily identifiable culture; what does the original design technique inspire you to stitch; what changes occur from taking a design from one medium to another; and can the overall technique be interoperated in stitching through a combination of non-traditional materials?

Registration opens January 1, 2018 and closes March 31, 2018.

Proposal for Challenge with a Twist project mailed to consultant by July 1, 2018

Final stitched piece mailed to consultant by September 1, 2018.

*Challenge may appeal to the more self-assured designer. A theme is given, and the choice of technique(s) is up to the participant. When the piece is worked, it is sent to the consultant for one evaluation. This evaluation will reinforce good color and design choices. and will suggest ways to achieve better results on future pieces by indicating how and why changes might be made.

*Challenge with a Twist is for the embroiderer who would like some design direction from a consultant. The Twist is that the design is sent to the consultant for feedback before it is stitched. You may send designs earlier than the deadline.
